ISO/UNDP 53001:2026: The World’s First Management System Standard for the SDGs

What is ISO/UNDP 53001?

ISO/UNDP 53001:2026, Management systems for the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) – Requirements, is a new international standard. It was developed jointly by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and launched in Paris in September 2026.

The standard sets out requirements for a management system that helps an organization increase its contribution to the SDGs. It builds sustainable development into purpose, strategy, operations and decision-making, instead of treating it as a side project or a report written once a year.

It has a companion document, ISO/UNDP 53002, which gives guidance on implementation. 53001 holds the requirements, and 53002 helps you meet them.

What does it require of organizations?

The standard gives organizations a structured way to:

•Identify and assess their positive and negative impacts on people and the planet

•Engage relevant interested parties

•Set meaningful SDG-related objectives

•Collect data and evaluate progress

•Embed these objectives into existing processes and governance

It follows a Plan-Do-Check-Act cycle, so it should feel familiar to anyone who works with ISO 9001 or ISO 14001. It is designed to work alongside those standards, and organizations with existing management systems can integrate it instead of building a parallel one.

Who is it for?

Any organization, regardless of size, sector or location. Manufacturers, food and logistics companies, service providers, NGOs, public bodies and financial institutions can all use it. It is relevant if you face pressure from customers, regulators, investors or donors to show real, measurable sustainability performance.

Key benefits

1.Credible, structured SDG action. It moves SDG commitments from voluntary statements to a defined, auditable framework.

2.Less greenwashing risk. Objectives, data and evidence give your sustainability claims something to stand on.

3.Better risk and opportunity management. You identify sustainable development risks and opportunities earlier.

4.Stakeholder trust. Customers, investors, regulators and partners get a consistent basis for assessing your performance.

5.Integration with your existing systems. It can sit alongside ISO 9001, 14001, 45001 and other standards, which reduces duplication.

6.Long-term relevance. It is designed to stay useful beyond 2030, including under any global goals that succeed the current SDGs.

7.Stronger tender and market position. Early adopters can show they are ahead of the market.

Why certification matters

Implementing a standard shows intent. Independent third-party certification shows that your system has been assessed against the requirements by an impartial body. For buyers, funders and partners, it is stronger evidence than a self-declaration.

Why choose Gitchia for certification?

Gitchia Institute of Global Certification is a Lahore-based, multi-standard certification body. Here is what we offer:

Notes before publishing (delete this section)

•Accreditation wording: Don’t describe 53001 certification as “accredited” unless you hold accreditation covering it. PNAC accreditation is still in process, and accreditation schemes for a standard this new may not exist yet. “Certification services” is the safer phrase. Check the Gitchia section against your current status.

•Timing: The standard is only about two weeks old. Confirm your internal readiness (auditor competence, procedures) before advertising services as available.

•Adoption: Pakistan’s national standards body may adopt it later, so that line is worth a revisit.
